Domaine Chandon Yarra Valley Chardonnay 2014
2014 Domaine Chandon Chardonnay
The cool climates of our vineyards in Victoria’s Yarra Valley produce Chardonnay fruit of consistently high quality. At Domaine Chandon we capture these pristine varietal characters and ensure our wines express regional integrity, great style and elegant sophistication.
Pale straw with green edges. Fresh and enticing white flowers, grapefruit and stone fruit aromas mix with subtle
spice characters. An immediate sense of delicacy, with fresh pear and apple flavours balanced by
zesty acidity and great length of flavour.
Drawing from the diverse climes of the Yarra Valley, this wine is blended from
the coolest sites of the Upper Yarra Valley, which are the last to ripen, as well
as a large proportion from the moderate altitude vineyards near Woori Yallock
and Yarra Junction. These vineyards are grown in granitic and red volcanic soils,
which naturally balance leaf area and fruitfulness, giving us low yields with great
intensity and flavour concentration. Fruit from the Yarra Valley floor adds to this,
providing flavour concentration and riper, stone fruit elements.
A season full of promise with good soil moisture and excellent bud burst soon
turned challenging with the untimely arrival of cold, wet and windy conditions
in September during flowering. This resulted in fewer bunches setting and a
reduced crop for many growers. Good weather favoured the remaining crop from
October to December. January arrived with warm summer conditions and a few
hot days to challenge the grapes but good soil moisture and a strong, vibrant
canopy permitted steady ripening under fantastic conditions. What had been a
challenging season for quantity had now turned to great optimism for exceptional
quality. Cool nights and bright sunny days allowed for the development of flavour
and maturity. Beautiful fruit with intensity, freshness and abundant natural
acidity were the result.
The vineyards chosen for Domaine Chandon Chardonnay were carefully monitored
by the winemakers throughout the ripening period to determine the exact timing
of the harvest. The grapes were harvested when they were expressing vibrant
and zesty Chardonnay flavours, as well as appropriate and moderate sugar
content. Fermentation in French oak barrels using 100% wild yeast and a
variety of fermentation temperatures has delivered a balance of fruit flavours and
winemaking complexity. To permit the finest fruit expression, less than 18% new
oak and no malolactic fermentation was used throughout the winemaking process.
